The Hughes Mural Project

A community-led project turns local ideas into lasting public art.

A colourful new chapter has been added to Hughes. Two striking community murals now transform the local shops and celebrate the stories, people and creativity that make the suburb special.

The project began through conversations with local residents who wanted to create something meaningful for their community. What started as an idea soon grew into a community-led initiative, supported by our Community Development team and shaped by local people every step of the way.

One mural focuses on celebrating notable people who have lived in Hughes and made significant contributions to the local community. The second mural draws inspiration from the ideas and imagination of local children, reflecting themes suggested by Year 3 students from Hughes Primary School. More than 40 students contributed artwork and ideas to help inform the final design.

Throughout the process, community members worked alongside artists, local businesses and key stakeholders to bring the vision to life. The project also showcased the power of collaboration, with residents participating in planning, design discussions and community consultation to ensure the murals genuinely reflected local voices and aspirations.

The initiative received support through grant funding, including a successful $14,000 grant from the Davencare Foundation, helping turn years of community ideas and planning into a lasting public artwork.

The completed murals were celebrated at a community unveiling event in May, bringing together residents, artists, supporters and community leaders to recognise the effort that went into creating these shared pieces of public art.

The Hughes Murals stand as a lasting symbol of community pride, connection and what can be achieved when local people come together to create something for everyone to enjoy.
